Balai Chand Mukhopadhyay, who is popularly known with the pen name Bonophool, was a prolific Bengali novelist, story writer and poet. He was born in 1899 at Purnia district of Bihar. He had developed a keen interest in literature since his childhood and during his school life he brainstormed many poems which portrayed his love for nature. The main theme of his literary works revolved around the deprived and marginal section of the society. He used his short stories to depict the plight of the poor people and their struggle to survive. One of the essences of his writing skill was that he used to make every character in his stories so much alive that they seemed to be real for the readers.

Some of his famous works are ‘Bindu Bishorgo’, ‘Trinokhondo’, ‘Maharani’,‘Bonophooler Golpo’, ‘Agnishwar’, ‘Urmimala’, ‘Bhuban Som’, ‘Tonni’, ‘Bonophooler Aro Golpo’, ‘Durbin’ etc. He has also exhibited his literary skill to make plays and cineplays which are full of humors. He has written two famous plays ‘Srimadhusudan’ and ‘Vidyasagar’ on two noble persons of the Bengali society Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar and Michael Madhusudan Dutta. He was accolade with Rabindra Puraskar in 1962, SharatSmriti Puraskar in 1951 and Jagattarini Padak in 1967 for his innumerable contribution to the Bengali literature. He departed from this world in 1979 leaving behind a great legacy.
